fflood aka Richard Wright, also affectionately known as ffloodi, is a Jamaican New Yorker with lots of chosen family in Oakland. He started deejaying in Kingston, Jamaica in 1985, where he was the co-founder of Ambassador’s Disco. Ambassador’s was a mobile sound system that quickly rose in demand and popularity for not only playing reggae, dancehall and soca, but also hip hop, soul, freestyle, new wave and 80’s pop. fflood moved back to his birthplace, New York City in 1988 during the golden era of hip hop, industrial and house music, and was transformed. He went on to spin at clubs, lounges, art openings, warehouse raves (and even a circus!) and soon became a part of the burgeoning underground techno, drum n’ bass/junglist and house music cultures. He moved to Oakland in 2002, where he started parties like Feel Free, Soul Selector, Magic Milkcrates, and had a residency at Jupiter for more than half a decade. He was also one of the first deejays to do at guest spot at thePeople over a decade ago!
In 2005, he co-produced a critically acclaimed future dub and roots album called “Negril To Kingston City.” He and mtfloyd are Transdub Massiv, and were blessed to have Me’shell Ndegeocello jump aboard to play bass alongside Jamaican acts like Rootz Underground and Tami Chynn. Transdub Massiv enjoyed successful tours and rave reviews in Europe with Me’shell.
ffloodi now resides in Florida, and he returns to thePeople to bring his eclectic style; celebrate 33 years deejaying (perfect number for a dj to celebrate!); collaborate and dance with old friends; and also to celebrate his 48th birthday in the Town he loves and misses.
